These coaches were used in urban areas on local and commuter trains in formations of two to six coaches, often hauled by quick accelerating tank engines. Seven of the 1930 batch were either built motor fitted to D1790, or converted very soon afterwards, with another 11 D1735s being rebuilt to D1790 in 1934/5. This latter batch had the flush-glazed end windows typical of Period III stock.
