Description

Although upper quadrant arms had been in use since shortly after the Grouping, the LNER tubular post signal dates from the mid-1930s. It was used for new installations and renewals until the end of the LNER period, and by the Eastern and North Eastern Regions of British Rail(ways). The design does not appear to have been common in Scotland, probably because the pre-grouping signals used lattice posts, which would have remained in better condition than the timber posts used south of the border. Many examples are still in use today, and new ones may still be installed where replacement by colour lights is inappropriate.

When fitted, the Eastern and North Eastern signals have subtle differences in the positioning of the platform, and the kit can be built in either form. The model photograph represents a North Eastern signal, whilst the taller prototype photograph is an Eastern example. Note also the variation in height of arm from the top of the post – although this was a standard design in theory, it wasn’t always so in practice!

The kit can be built as a home or distant signal in any height up to 27’6″. Taller signals will require an extra S009/4 ladder to be purchased and joined.

The kit is designed for soldered construction, but Araldite or superglue can be used in places, particularly if the finished signal is not intended to operate. Some simple marking out, cutting and shaping of parts is required.
